As I am recovering from the first ever Great Googamooga Festival (event coverage coming shortly), my anticipation is growing for three more epic New York City based festivals. If you missed your chance to head west for Coachella (P.S. Next year’s is already completely sold out), don’t fret, we have your NYC Festival info right here and there’s plenty of top caliber names to keep you satisfied.
Northside Festival – June 14 – 21
First up, the 2012 Northside Festival is growing out of the heart of Brooklyn and is being billed as the next SXSW or, as the festival site describes, “the most incredible showcase of “what’s next” in music, film, entrepreneurship, and art.” It spans 8 days, with over 350 bands, 50+ films, over 100 artists, at more than 30 venues across Williamsburg and Greenpoint from June 14-21. Badges are on sale now and pretty damn affordable. They get you into the show and discounts at local restaurants and retailers.
- GZA (performing Liquid Swords with Grupo Fantasma) at Music Hall of Williamsburg (June 14).
- Jens Lekman, of Montreal, The Thermals and Beach Fossils performing an all-ages show at the new Williamsburg Park on Friday, June 15.
- Also, Kid Sister, Ultramagnetic MC’s, These United States, Magik Markers, The Thermals, Ceremony, Tinariwen, Starfucker, Kool Keith, Crystal Stilts and so many more.
If you’re a true indie-music head, this one is not to miss. For more info and full festival line up, head over to http://www.northsidefestival.com.
The Governor’s Ball Music Festival – June 23 & 24
The Governor’s Ball Music Festival returns to Randalls Island Park on June 23 & 24. There’s isn’t much I can say about this line-up other than “HOLY CRAP that’s a solid list of bands and you’re a fool if you miss this one.” Passion Pit, Beck, Modest Mouse, Chromeo, James Murphy, Santigold (who KILLED IT at Coachella), Fiona Apple, Explosions in the Sky, Atmosphere, Major Lazer, Penguin Prison… I don’t know where to stop. The entire line up is just killing me its so good. Tickets are on sale now at GOVBALL.com
Catalpa – New York City’s Music Festival – July 28 & 29
Another inaugural fest coming up this year is the Catalpa Festival promising to be the pioneer New York festival, “with as much an emphasis on site artistry, interactive experiences and experimentation as the musical entertainment itself.”
Catalpa will bring over 40 performers from Blues to Rock to Hip-Hop, Electronic, Reggae and Indie + art installations of all scales creating somewhat of a fantasy world for us NYers to escape reality for a weekend. Sounds good to me!
- Snoop Dogg will perform his debut album Doggystyle…
- Also The Black Keys, TV On the Radio, Girl Talk, Mat and Kim, Cold War Kids, Matisyahu, Hercules and Love Affair, Cold War Kids, and Felix da Housecat (one of my favorite DJs ever).
Catalpa will be held on Randalls Island NYC from 1pm to 11pm over July 28th & 29th.

One last event to note is The LACOSTE L!VE Williamsburg Park Concert Series which runs June 15 – August 24 featuring Jane’s Addiction, Die Antwoord, Counting Crows, Of Montreal (part of Northside Festival), Cake, My Morning Jacket, Cypress Hill, OK GO (free show) and a handful of others. Tickets available at www.ticketmaster.com.
