With temperatures in NYC touching 100 degrees – bringing with it the madness and devil-may-care disposition of a true heatwave – it was serendipitous that I should meet with jewelry designer Kozue Badacious, who credits Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing as one of her inspirations.
In fact, it’s everything 1990’s that fuels the design duo Badacious, comprised of friends and Japanese natives Kozue and Ayumi. “It was a freer, more colorful time,” says Kozue of her favorite decade, who was outfitted in an oversized 90’s Vivienne Westwood graphic tee and signature Rocking Horse shoes. The Badacious designs are undeniably vibrant, simultaneously reminiscent of military decorations, A+ bedazzling and the photography of Jamel Shabazz. The earrings flaunt names like Nookie, Funk Fujiyama and E.A.T (Everything Ass & Tits).
Kozue was gracious enough to share with me some of the fresh designs dropping this month. And, though she is experimenting with some new imagery (“I am obsessed with suns right now!”) the new pieces fall right in line with the kaleidescopic, running-man-ready baubles we’ve gone gaga for.
